Cornel Cornel Hart commented on this post about 4 years agoLet's think together on the definition of community development!
Below is the definition that was adopted by the International Association for Community Development (IACD) and affirmed by the CDS BOD in 2016. At CDS we would like to engage members in in deliberating a definition or description of community development that we can consider for adoption by the society. The aim is to have a concise, clear statement that captures what we understand as modern community development. This will help us as a profession to clearly articulate our interest and purpose.
"Community development is a practice-based profession and an academic discipline that promotes participative democracy, sustainable development, rights, economic opportunity, equality and social justice, through the organisation, education and empowerment of people within their communities, whether these be of locality, identity or interest, in urban and rural settings."
We would welcome your comments on the following questions:
1. What are the key elements that you would like to see in a definition of community development?
2. What about the proposed community development definition resonates for you?
3. What do find challenging about the way the proposed definition describes community development?
4. What would you suggest as a change, or alternative working for the definition?Post is under moderationStream item published successfully. Item will now be visible on your stream.
I'm very excited about this group. I actually work in urban, suburban, and rural settings and I think they all need more CD!! Anybody reading anything interesting on this topic right now?Post is under moderationStream item published successfully. Item will now be visible on your stream.
