My Achievements

My Achievements:
Dr. Allen co-directs three collaborative local-to-national applied and engaged research and education programs that improve climate, visibility, and engagement of underrepresented and underutilized local community residents for community-based system change in grassroots entrepreneurship, creative and community placemaking, and digital storytelling: the UW-Madison Defy Ventures Entrepreneur in Training program for both incarcerated to post-release populations; the Entrepreneurs of Color Research Initiative, and; the Growing Connections program. Each program engages and applies Milwaukee youth and/or adults’ lived experiences toward workforce and entrepreneurship skill development.

A county-wide community educator and faculty member, Dr. Allen has earned the 2019 Outstanding Achievement Award and the 2016 Wisconsin Extension Environmental and Community Development Association Outstanding Early Career Award, both from the Joint Council of Extension Professionals.

As national co-leader of a 2016 to 2018 seven-state Extension project utilizing local cultural arts to increase underrepresented audience participation in public deliberation, Dr. Allen continues from that effort to strengthen and deepen the Milwaukee youth and adults’ resident leader community networks she has directly engaged. From 2010 to 2013, Dr. Allen worked in her hometown of Detroit with family and neighbors on efforts publicly acknowledged as directly leading to their 2014 $500,000 ArtPlace America grant award – the community’s first major grant award in over 25 years. Dr. Allen co-created the Engagement Scholarship Consortium Emerging Engagement Scholar Workshop, institutionalized in 2007 (its first year). From 1996 to 1998, Dr. Allen was founding planner/coordinator of the mayor’s citywide Detroit community revitalization strategy she designed with resident leaders.
