Bio: |
Scott J. Peters is a professor in the Department of Development Sociology at Cornell University. From 2012-2017, he served as Faculty Co-Director of Imagining America: Artists and Scholars in Public Life. As a historian of American higher education, Dr. Peters studies the ways colleges and universities have been engaged in off-campus civic life. His most recent book is Democracy and Higher Education: Traditions and Stories of Civic Engagement (Michigan State University Press, 2010). His next book, Jumping Into Civic Life, will be published by the Kettering Foundation Press in early 2018. Dr. Peters served from 2011-2016 on the leadership team of a national research and extension initiative, funded with a $5 million grant from USDA, entitled “Food Dignity: Action Research on Engaging Food Insecure Communities and Universities in Building Sustainable Community Food Systems.” He was a Co-PI for an NSF-funded workshop on the theme of “civic science” that was held in Washington, DC in October of 2014. He is currently co-leading the research component of a new arts-based initiative on community and economic development called “Performing Our Future,” which has been funded by the National Endowment for the Arts, the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, and ArtPlace America.
