2013 Conference

The Site Selection Committee of the Community Development Society is interested in receiving letters of interest from groups who might like to host the 2013 Community Development Society Annual Conference. Hosting the conference can provide considerable exposure regarding local community development activities in the area. It provides an opportunity to have local practitioners interact with experts from across the country and internationally. Organizing a conference can build ties among local agencies or groups and key personnel with lasting benefits independent of the actual conference proceedings. Bringing an annual conference also provides an economic stimulus to the area as well as opportunities to gain recognition for the sponsoring agency(ies). The selection of a site in July 2013 will be a two-step operation. First, an interested local host committee should draft a memo that includes a statement of interest, level of support (financially and otherwise) from local agencies and members, possible locations in the region, and a short description of the special development issues and attractions in the region. Second, the sites selection committee will invite complete proposals from groups who make especially strong proposals. It is especially helpful to have a site with relatively easy and/or low cost air access.  Recent conference locations have included St. Louis, MO; Appleton, WI; Saskatoon; and Memphis, TN.  New Orleans is hosting the site in 2010; Boise, ID will be the site for 2011; and the 2012 meeting will be in Cincinnati, OH.  All submissions are encouraged by the site selection committee.
A potential host committee should examine the “Guidelines and Procedures for Hosting the Community Development Society Annual Conferences” available below.

Future CDS Conferences

The Community Development Society (CDS) is a membership organization providing leadership to professionals and citizens across the spectrum of community development. The Society’s annual international conference provides members with multiple opportunities to learn what's new in the profession, to exchange ideas, to obtain the most current research and reference information available, and to share professional expertise. We view community development as a profession that integrates knowledge from many disciplines with theory, research, teaching, and practice as important and interdependent functions that are vital in the public and private sectors.

Furthermore, the CDS annual conference is itself a community development tool, offering a concentration of community development skills and expertise that can be tapped for local needs and interests. Local host sites are encouraged to use attendees as community development consultants or experts for local groups or constituents, providing opportunities for true interaction and dialogue with local practitioners.

The Board of Directors of the Community Development Society invites interested organizations and institutions from any community, state, region, province, chapter, or country to consider hosting an annual conference. This bid document outlines procedures and requirements for hosting a CDS conference, guidelines for submitting a bid, and criteria for of a conference site and local host.
